Sex Toy Collective Tips:
How To Use A Dildo
Whether you’ve just received a Clone A Willy or you’ve bought your very first dildo, there are some key differences between real sex and using a dildo. Putting a real penis inside you is very different from putting a sex toy inside you, so listen up if you want to stay safe and have fun!
I’m JC Ways, Professional Sex Toy Reviewer from Sex Toy Collective here with a quick guide on how to use a dildo!
Preparation and Cleaning
Before you put a dildo inside your body, you want to ensure that it is 100% clean. Even if you washed it after you last used it, there may be some dust particles on the surface which have gathered over time. Always give your dildo a quick clean with warm water and antibacterial soap before you use it. Pat it dry with a clean towel if you’re in a hurry to get it inside you!
If you want to skip the cleaning phase or you’re worried about bacteria clinging to the surface of the dildo, you can always use a condom over the top of the dildo. This way, you just toss the condom away after use and your dildo is fine, though I’d still recommend keeping it clean as bacteria can travel from your hands. I ended up with a UTI once because I didn’t clean my sex toys when I should have.

Which lube should I use for a dildo?
If you want the short answer, high-quality water-based lube is the best option for most dildos. There are main types of lubes, and their compatibility varies depending on what sex toy you’re using.
Water-based lube – ideal for basically all types of dildos, but can dry out quickly
Silicone-based lube – lasts a long time, but only safe for use with non-silicone dildos
Oil-based lube – ideal for basically all types of dildos, lasts a long time, but takes a long time to exit the body
If you’re using a 100% silicone sex toy like the Clone A Willy, then water-based lube and oil-based lube are suitable. Water-based lube is inexpensive and readily available, but can dry out quickly so you often need to reapply it mid-way through your dildo session.
On the other hand, oil-based lube is very long lasting (and natural!) but it takes a long time to leave your body and it can leave stains on your sheets if you’re not careful. You should not pair oil-based lube with condoms or any sex toys made from TPE (like the sleeve in our Clone A Pussy Plus+ kit). Coconut oil is commonly used as a sex toy lubricant. I personally use coconut oil quite a lot on my own dildos – the smell is gorgeous!
How to maximize pleasure when using a dildo
Using a dildo is just like having sex – you need to be in the mood. You need to feel horny and turned-on in order to enjoy your dildo experience. Do whatever you need to do – dim the lights, watch some porn, have a glass of wine, anything to set the tone for pleasure!
For vaginal insertion – consider warming your pussy up with a clit vibe to get the juices flowing which helps you to self-lubricate. If you have a hard time getting moist, rub on your clitoris with some lube to set things in motion! Treat your body with care when inserting anything into your body, especially if it's your first time.
For anal insertion – your bottom needs time to adjust to a dildo-sized object being inside it. Begin to loosen your bumhole by fingering yourself with a high-quality lube. Start with 1 finger, working your way up to 2 or 3 as it gets more comfortable. When you do finally insert the dildo anally, coat it with PLENTY of lube – your anus doesn’t self-lubricate as a vagina does. You might also want to consider anal douching to keep things clean. Furthermore, NEVER take a dildo out of a bum and insert it inside a vagina afterward – that’s a fast way to get bacterial vaginosis.
How deep are you going? – if you plan on going very deep, you should get a toy with a flared base (i.e. a flat part at the bottom) which stops the toy slipping inside you. This is especially important for deep play with anal toys, as they can easily get trapped inside your anal cavity and require an embarrassing trip to the hospital.
Have fun using your dildo
The great thing about using a dildo is that you can customize the experience to exactly how you want it – your hand is the boss! Do you like getting pentrated slow and deep? Then go for it! Do you prefer getting railed fast and hard? Then do it! Have a fun time trying out different speeds and rhythms until you find one that suits your pleasure.
You can use a dildo lying down, sitting down, standing up… however you want! Some people also like to use “suction cup dildos” which stick to a hard wall or floor. This way, they can “ride” the dildo as if it were a real penis! Personally, I like to lean against my bed frame and sort of “rock” back and forth on my dildo, using the leverage of the bouncy mattress to get more movement. I’m really lazy, so it’s a great technique for my fellow lazy dildo users.
Of course, some dildos like the Clone A Willy have a vibrator inside them which you can use to add new sensations into the mix. These vibrations can really enhance your dildo experience, especially if you’re using a dildo vaginally. You could even stimulate your clitoris by holding your vibrating Clone A Willy against it to mix things up!
As long as you’re staying safe, there are no “rules” on how to use a dildo. If it feels good and it doesn’t hurt, enjoy yourself!
How to Take Care of Your Dildo
As someone who’s gotten a UTI from their own sex toys in the past, I’d always recommend sanitizing your dildo after use. If you’re using a 100% silicone dildo, then you can kill all of the bacteria on the toy by boiling it in water for around 5-10 minutes. Bear in mind that silicone toys that have vibrators in them can only be boiled if the vibrator can be removed (luckily the vibrator used in Clone A Willy replicas can easily be wiggled out)!
If you’ve got a non-silicone dildo (which I wouldn’t recommend – silicone is much safer) then you can clean it thoroughly with warm water and antibacterial soap. Alternatively, you could always let it sit in a 10% bleach solution to kill any pesky bacteria living on the surface.
Washing your dildo in warm water and antibacterial soap will usually do the job, to be honest. I’m just not taking any risks these days!
When it comes to storing your dildo, please remember that silicone dildos like the Clone A Willy cannot touch one another in storage. If you have a bag of silicone dildos that all touch each other for extended periods of time, you end up with a chemical reaction where the dildo "melts" and becomes misshapen. It’s the same reason that you can’t use silicone-based lube with silicone toys. Silicone does not mix well with other silicone.
Practice makes perfect!
